Can I charge for a no-show test day?
Yes — absolutely. If your Pupil Agreement states that the pupil is responsible for test fees and your car costs on test day, and they don't show up, you can charge them. The key is having it in writing before test day arrives.
What should my cancellation policy say?
At minimum: 48 hours notice for standard lessons, 5 working days for test-day cancellations, and your charge for late cancellations (full lesson fee is standard and enforceable). Your Cancellation Policy covers all of this already.

Common questions

Can I enforce a cancellation fee legally?
Yes — as long as it was agreed in writing before the lesson. A pupil who signs your lesson agreement and cancellation policy has agreed to the terms. The fee must be reasonable (proportionate to your actual loss — a full lesson fee for a last-minute cancellation is fair and enforceable).
Do I need these if I'm with a franchise?
Your franchise may have its own terms, but many do not provide individual instructor–pupil agreements. Check your franchise agreement first. These documents complement (not replace) any franchise terms and give you a layer of personal protection.
Is the complaints procedure a DVSA requirement?
DVSA does not mandate a specific format but encourages all ADIs to have a written complaints procedure as part of professional standards. Having one in writing demonstrates professionalism and gives pupils a clear process — which is also your first line of defence if a formal DVSA complaint is made.
